Partnership between residents and the arms of law enforcement is key. A focus on the work of the Community Police Unit is essential to rebuilding trust and nurturing a sense of understanding and shared purpose towards a safer East PoS, as well as working with communities to create a sense of responsibility for and ownership of community assets.

Short Term: 1-3 Years / Long Term: 7+ Years Joint responsibility with another agency

Work with the relevant agency to ensure adequate support for community policing units. Including:

  • Establishment of Community Police Units in all police stations in East PoS and allocation of dedicated resources (human, technical and financial).
  • Training in life skills for community police (including communications, diversity and gender sensitivity, anger management, dispute resolution and counseling)
  • Engagement of residents in a partnership based on trust and mutual respect
  • Ensuring community police officers are a part of community outreach programmes
  • Ensuring adequate patrols and officers in posts and stations

Work with the relevant agencies and stakeholders to install CCTV cameras in critical spots

Develop a Community Assets Maintenance Programme with community groups to create sense of ownership and value and deter alternative/undesirable activities
