These programmes can foster: increased self-worth; skills necessary to manage stress, the workplace, and other life challenges; marketable skills; better overall health outcomes; and pride in the historical legacy of East PoS —an area renowned for its contributions to sports and arts and culture. All of these can also be deterrents to anti-social behaviours.

Short Term: 1-3 Years / Long Term: 7+ Years

Develop programmes for the development of residents, driven by community interest, and needs and potential for improved life outcomes of participants.

  • Focus particularly on those geared towards mental health, nutrition, personal development, life skills, sexual and reproductive health. Examples: mental health counselling; cooking classes; urban agriculture (see Go Local and Be Sustainable, Dover Kohl Plan pgs. 5.11-5.13); sexual health and rights programmes (work with Family Planning Association of T&T); financial literacy

Increase opportunities for social and economic interactions within East PoS among both residents and non-residents via artistic, cultural and sporting events. Examples: public art programme (see Dover Kohl pgs. 6.34, 10.8), East PoS Arts and Culture Festival (see UNESCO guidelines on festivals)

Ensure suitable sporting, recreational, and community facilities including recreation grounds, parks, community centres, football fields, cricket pitches, and more (see Strategy Six for more).

Design and implement the SportsPLUS Programme using sport as a tool for personal, social and economic development, education, and community integration i.e. building a culture of peace.

  • The programme should consider ways to increase integration between communities in team sport events e.g. by mixing individuals from different communities on a given team.
